How do I adjust the headlights on my Ford?

You can adjust them with a Phillips head screwdriver following the instructions in this article or the "Maintenance" section of your Owner's Manual.

Important: You will need some masking tape, a Phillips screwdriver, and a measuring tape.

Aiming Your Headlamps

To see if your headlight direction needs to be fine-tuned:

  1. Park your vehicle about 25 feet from a wall or garage door with your headlights turned on and aimed at it.
  2. Measure the distance from the ground to the center mark of the headlamp.
  3. Place strips of masking tape on the wall at the same height.
  4. Determine the type of headlamps you have by looking for the "VOL" or "VOR" marks at the bottom of the lamps. Depending on your headlamp type, the light should either hit the tape or two inches below.
    • For Halogen lamps (VOR), the beam should be right on the tape.
    • For HID lamps (VOL), the beam should be about two inches below the tape.

To adjust your headlights:

  1. Refer to "Adjusting Your Headlamps" in the "Maintenance" section of your Owner's Manual for the location of the vertical adjuster for each headlamp.
  2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to turn the adjuster either clockwise or counterclockwise in order to adjust the vertical aim of the headlamp.
