23S33: Fusion (2019-2020) Battery and Power Loss Recall

2019—2020 Ford Fusion® Energi Plug-in Hybrid — Battery and Power Loss Recall

Electronic key fob for a Ford vehicle

Recall Reference Number: 23S33

The safety of you and your passengers is key to every vehicle we build. That is why we’ve issued a recall for certain 2019–2020 Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid models.

  • There is a chance a fire may break out in the trunk area while driving, increasing the risk of injury. We are asking you to please avoid charging your vehicle until a remedy is available.
  • Some models may not start or may display a "Stop Safely Now" message while driving, followed by a loss of power within a few seconds.

You can find out if your vehicle is included in this recall by entering your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) here.

If you own or lease a recalled vehicle, you will be notified by mail when parts are available and instructed to take your vehicle to a Ford Dealer or Lincoln Retailer for a final remedy repair. There will be no charge for this service.

As an interim repair, you can now book an appointment to temporarily disable plug-in charging until parts are available for the final repair remedy. The interim repair will remove the possibility of an internal high voltage battery failure. You can book an appointment online with participating dealers in your FordPass® App or by contacting your local Ford Dealer.

Ford is also offering an alternative remedy option for vehicles affected by this recall. Ford is offering customers a statutory refund of the vehicle’s purchase price, less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. The “refund amount” is based on fair market value of the vehicle, plus a 15% premium. “Fair market value” is based on the original Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), less depreciation as determined using regional market data, and does not include the cost of any modifications made to the vehicle after the first retail sale. This alternative remedy will be offered until July 1, 2025, when sufficient quantities of high voltage batteries are expected to be available for final remedy repairs.

For details on the statutory refund option and to view an estimated refund amount for your vehicle, access the Vehicle Refund Estimator using the link below. You can also contact the Ford Customer Relationship Center (CRC) at 1-833-807-3673 to lock in your official statutory refund amount and to proceed with the refund process. When calling, please reference recall number 23S33 and have your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and current vehicle mileage ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the issue tied to this recall?

Certain vehicles may not start or will display a “Stop Safely Now” message while driving, followed by a loss of power within a few seconds. There is also a risk of a vehicle fire breaking out in the trunk area while driving. A loss of power or a vehicle fire while driving can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

What is the cause of the issue?

The current interrupt device (CID) can create excess voltage and current flow, damaging the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM).

What is the interim repair?

Your dealer will install a fuse block between the high voltage battery and the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM). That will remove the possibility of an internal high voltage battery failure damaging the BECM, which could lead to a fire in the luggage compartment.

Your dealer will also disable the plug-in charging feature of your vehicle via a software update. If the vehicle is plugged into a high voltage charger the battery will not charge. Your vehicle will continue to operate as a non-plug-in hybrid vehicle. When the final remedy repair is available and completed, the plug-in charging will be functional again.

When will the final remedy repair be ready?

Ford is working hard to find a solution as soon as possible.

What should customers do in the meantime?

Customers should not charge their vehicles until the remedy is available. Lowering the battery’s state of charge will reduce the risk of power loss and fire around the battery control module in the trunk.

Is Ford offering a vehicle refund option?

As an alternative remedy option for vehicles affected by this recall, Ford is offering customers a statutory refund of the vehicle’s purchase price, less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. If I have the interim repair completed, will Ford still offer this statutory refund option for my vehicle?

Yes. This statutory refund will be available as an option until customers are notified that enough parts are available for the final repair remedy.

Why weren’t customers instructed to park outside?

We don’t have any evidence that shows unattended vehicles are at risk.

Can customers still drive their vehicles?

Ford is not instructing customers to stop driving their vehicles. Until the remedy is available, lowering the battery’s state of charge will reduce the risk of power loss and fire around the vehicle’s battery control module, which is located in the trunk.

Is Ford aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this condition?

As of May 2024, Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this condition.

Is Ford aware of any fires related to this condition?

Yes. As of May 2024, seven fires have occurred in total. Two occurred while customers were driving the vehicle and five occurred while being serviced at the dealership.

Are there any warranty issues related to this concern?
