Building vehicles you can count on is one of our most important jobs, which is why Ford has issued a recall for certain 2018–2020 model year Expedition SUVs.
The driver and/or front passenger seatbelt retractor pretensioners may deploy inadvertently. The primary seatbelt locking functions continue to function properly.
Dealers will inspect both front seatbelt retractors and replace as necessary. You can book an appointment online with participating dealers in your FordPass® App or contact your local Ford Dealer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the issue tied to this recall?
Certain 2018–2020 Expedition SUVs have experienced inadvertent deployment of the seatbelt retractor pretensioner while the vehicle’s engine is on. Inadvertent deployment of the retractor pretensioner will result in the seatbelt being locked in position and will not retract or extend.
What is the cause of the issue?
Certain seatbelt retractor pretensioners may develop internal corrosion and partial separation of an internal weld leading to high resistance, or an open circuit. If left unresolved, this condition may result in inadvertent retractor pretensioner deployment. Increased humidity inside the cab, caused by water leakage after customer air-conditioning usage in the hot temperature areas, may potentially contribute to the development of corrosion.
What is the expected repair?
Dealers will inspect both front seatbelt retractors and replace as necessary. Dealers will also inspect for the presence of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) drain tube elbow and install if not present.
Which vehicles are affected?
Certain 2018-2020 Expedition vehicles built between October 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019.
Is there a warning or alert for customers?
The airbag warning light may come on prior to an inadvertent retractor pretensioner deployment, should one occur. Most affected vehicles experienced an airbag warning light for an average of six weeks prior to inadvertent deployment.
When will you notify customers?
Customers will begin being notified March 4, 2024.
Will there be a charge to customers?
No.
