How to Listen and Reply to Text Messages

SYNC® will read incoming text messages to you while your vehicle is in motion. SYNC can translate commonly used abbreviations such as LOL. When your vehicle is stopped*, you can choose among 15 preset messages to reply to your messages.27

*Note: Downloading and sending text messages using Bluetooth48 are phone-dependent features. Certain features in text messaging are speed-dependent and not available when your vehicle is traveling at speeds more than 3 mph (5 km/h).

The automatic phonebook download process varies, depending on your vehicle model and year.

If you have a 2017 model year SYNC-equipped vehicle or newer, or one of the 2016 and 2015 vehicles listed below, follow the first set of instructions.

  • 2016 model year, SYNC-equipped Escape, Explorer, Edge, F-150, Focus, and Mustang.
  • 2015 model year, SYNC-equipped Edge, F-150, Focus, and Mustang.

If you have an older vehicle that is not listed above, follow the second set of instructions.

 

First Set of Instructions

 

  2. A soft tone alerts you to an incoming text message and a notification displays on your radio screen.
  3. Press Listen to receive the message.
  4. Press or pull the Voice button and say, "Read text message."
  5. SYNC will read the message aloud.
  6. Stop your vehicle to reply to the text message with the radio controls.
    When the text message displays on the screen, press More to reply, then press Reply to sender.
  7. Press the Arrow buttons to scroll through a list of 15 preset-messages on the radio screen.
    1. I'll call you back in a few minutes.
    2. I just left, I'll be there soon.
    3. Can you give me a call?
    4. I'm on my way.
    5. I'm running a few minutes late.
    6. I'm ahead of schedule, so I'll be there early.
    7. I'm outside.
    8. I'll call you when I get there.
    9. OK
    10. Yes
    11. No
    12. Thanks
    13. Stuck in traffic.
    14. Call me later.
    15. LOL
  8. When the message you want to send appears on the screen, press Send.
  9. SYNC prompts you to confirm your selection. Press Yes to confirm.

Second Set of Instructions
