Can I drive my Ford while it is updating?
Some SYNC®* and software updates can be completed while your vehicle is being driven while others require your vehicle to be off.

Software Updates - SYNC 4A | SYNC 4
- Some updates will happen seamlessly in the background while you are driving.
- Non-drivable updates require your vehicle to be turned off while updating. Most complete within minutes, while others may take longer**. You should schedule the update to occur when you do not need to drive your vehicle, such as overnight.
SYNC Updates - SYNC 3 and Previous Generations of SYNC
Wi-Fi (SYNC 3 required)
You can drive and use SYNC during the update.
Flash Drive (SYNC 3 and Previous Generations of SYNC)
Your vehicle must be in Park (P) when you initiate the SYNC update installation process. Make sure your vehicle is in a well-ventilated area as your vehicle must remain running until the update is complete. Once the download process starts, you may drive your vehicle.

*Don’t drive while distracted. Use voice-operated systems when possible; don’t use handheld devices while driving. Some features may be locked out while the vehicle is in gear. Not all features are compatible with all phones.
